Using Akismet to fight against spam

When you install WordPress for the first time, you automatically install two plug-ins with it.

One of these is Akismet and it serves a very useful purpose. Akismet helps keep your comments free of spam.

Now, there are other plug-ins around that do this, and I used “Spam Karma” for many years.  But unfortunately this is no longer being developed.

Akismet uses different techniques to recognise spam, and because so many blogs use it, they can build up some good pattern recognitions and blacklists to keep them all spam-free.

Using Akismet is currently free for personal blogs, but not for commercial ones.  However the fees are reasonable and if your blog is still in the early stages they don’t currently require you to pay.  Once you start making money, that changes.

So to use Akismet on your blog, first log into WordPress using an administrator account.

1. Click on “Plugins” in the “Plugins” section of the sidebar.

Click on Plugins

2. Akismet is probably at the top of the plug-in list.  Click on “Activate” to activate it.

Click on Activate

3. Now click on “enter your Akismet API key”.

Click on enter your Akismet API key

4. Finally, enter your key and click on “Update options.”

Enter your API Key

If you don’t have an Akismet key, then you can apply for one
